Article Charges and Copyright

Publication fees are required for publication in the journals of the American Astronomical Society (The Astrophysical Journal, The Astronomical Journal, The Astrophysical Journal Supplements, and The Astrophysical Journal Letters). These fees cover some of the costs of publication and allow us to more fairly share charges between researchers and libraries. Please be aware that the journals do not receive direct funding from any external agencies. Support from author publication fees allows lower subscription rates and thus a greater circulation for the journal as well as open access after one year.

Unlike the above journals, Research Notes of the AAS currently have no author publication fees.

In response to European research funding mandates, the AAS is pleased to offer authors a Gold Open Access option for its main journals (ApJ, AJ, ApJ Supplements, and ApJ Letters), effective January 5, 2017. Gold OA articles are immediately made freely available upon publication and are published by the AAS under a CC-BY license. This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation. Copyright transfer agreements and Gold OA fees are listed below.

Research Notes of the AAS are available to all readers without any access charge or subscription.

Author Publication Fees

The American Astronomical Society calculates author publication fees using an approach that counts units of information in the digital form that the author supplies; we call these units “digital quanta”. Digital quanta are units of information in digital form that can include words, figures, tables, data components, and figures within a figure set.

The table below lists the types of digital quanta and the corresponding components equal to a single quantum. Digital quanta will be charged at a rate of $31 per quantum with the exception of word quanta, which will be charged at a rate of $28 per quantum. The pricing structure for Gold Open Access manuscripts is $50 for text quanta and $46 for digital quanta.

Type of quanta Components/Quanta charged
Words 350
Figures 1
Tables 1
Data Components (MRTs, MPG, etc…) 1
Figure Sets 100 Figures

We provide estimates of the author publication fees during the peer review process, using our online tool. In addition to the above digital quanta, there are surcharges for specific cases. These are listed in the table below.

Type of surcharge Cost
Letters handling charge $120
Letters handling charge (Gold Open Access) $600
Errata handling charge $30
