AAS names a new Scientific Software Editor

12 December 2018

We’re delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Steve Crawford as the second software editor for AAS Journals. Steve leads the group developing the calibration software for the Hubble Space Telescope and its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope at the Space Telescope Science Institute.  He is a maintainer on the Astropy Project and pursues research in how galaxies in the Universe evolve.  Previously, he worked on the Southern African Large Telescope helping to observe everything from near Earth asteroids to exoplanets to merging neutron stars. He will work with Prof. Chris Lintott (Lead Editor for Software, Data, Instrumentation and Laboratory Astrophysics) as we continue to improve the service provided to the astronomical community.

Dr Crawford replaces Dr Tom Robitaille on the AAS Journals’ editorial staff. Dr Robitaille played a leading role in the reform of the AAS journals’ policy on software, and in establishing our journals as the leading space for published communication on software in astronomy. We thank him for his service over the last three years.
